Migrant patua, or scroll painters, converged around Kalighat temple in Kolkata, early in the 18th century and gave rise to a new school. For more than a hundred years pilgrims offered a ready market for the Pat paintings as souvenirs. Pat paintings are typically rendered on hand made cotton pulp paper and backed with old saris. Natural colours are used. Kalighat pat paintings focused mainly on religious and traditional subjects. The introduction of secular themes specially that of the "Babu" and the "Bibi" among others are of great interest now.
