Migrant patua, or scroll painters, converged around Kalighat temple in Kolkata, early in the 18th century and gave rise to a new school. For more than a hundred years pilgrims offered a ready market for the Pat paintings as souvenirs. Pat paintings are typically rendered on hand made cotton pulp paper and backed with old saris. Natural colours are used. Kalighat pat paintings focused mainly on religious and traditional subjects. The introduction of secular themes specially that of the "Babu" and the "Bibi" among others are of great interest now. I bought this lovely painting to give as a present to someone who loves cats and it is the perfect gift. The painting itself is exactly as published on the website and came carefully packed. As with traditional Kalighat paintings, the paper is pasted onto cloth (old sari, I think), the subjects are very lively, with the cat casually draping an arm around the woman - like old friends.
