Pure Bhagalpur Silk Handwoven Saree - Shades of Green. An elegant style statement indeed. Bhagalpur silk also known as ‘Wild Silk’ has a distinct, raw character of its own type. Completely handwoven in what is famously known as the ‘Silk City’ on the banks of the river Ganges in Bihar, Bhagalpur has been a centre of silk production for centuries. Wild silk comes from the cocoons of silkworms harvested from the forested area around Bhagalpur, thereby also providing an incentive for people to conserve the forest. Wild silk comes in various shades of brown, beige and gold, reflecting the different trees the silkworms have fed on. The threads are shorter than those of mulberry silk and are hand spun rather than reeled. This creates a more 'slubby' fabric with a subtle pattern created by the different thread lengths and thicknesses.
