Eri Silk
Eri silk, also called Ahimsa silk or peace silk is a non-violent silk which does not require to kill the moth to extract the fibre. The moth leaves the cocoon after spinning and flies off. It is said that women in Assam weave fairytales into their fabrics. Rooted in symbolism, textiles of Assam are a woven manifesto of the region’s traditions, culture and beliefs. Traditionally, textile designs in the state have been drawn from nature. Stylized and geometric forms representing flowers, plants, animals, hills and cultural objects like the jaapi, xorai are seen decorating the textiles. Rivers and hills are executed in geometric forms as motifs or as patterns which mainly prevail in tribal dresses of Assam.
