A handcrafted banana fibre mat Created in spiralling circles, this table mat is a departure from your standard This mat is part of Ikai Asai’s Lila collection, and takes inspiration from Pondicherry and its gentle pace of life. This product is handcrafted and therefore slight variations in colours, textures and forms are inevitable and aren’t flaws. Banana Fiber is extracted from the bark of the banana plant.  The trunk is peeled and the skin is seperated. The white portion of the bark is processed into knotted fibres. Once the bark is spliced,  the peices are hand-twisted into ropes on rubber sheets by the artisans. The ropes are immersed in water slightly and hand crochet-ed into products. The final products made with banana barks are laid out in the sun for two days.
